Silver is a material in constant change that reacts on contact with air, gradually developing a darker layer known as oxidation (tarnish). How quickly this occurs depends, among other things, on the humidity of the air. The character of the surface also changes over time; a high-gloss finish becomes slightly more matte, while a matte finish gains a little more lustre.

Maintain the silver-plated surface by gently rubbing it with a soft cloth. For more thorough cleaning, choose a mild polish free from abrasive particles. Since the surface scratches easily, avoid brushes, steel wool and the like. Also avoid prolonged contact with oxidising substances, as this can cause permanent etching damage. Always wipe the surface with a dry, soft cloth, as any remaining moisture may alter its appearance.
